Fasting & Medication: How to Fast Safely

Whether it’s for a spiritual breakthrough, a church-wide fast, or a personal season of prayer, many Christians feel called to fast. But if you are managing a chronic condition like diabetes or heart disease, that call to fast can feel like a dangerous risk. I’ve seen people stop their medications "in faith" to go on a 3-day water fast, only to end up in the emergency room.

Let’s be very clear: God values your obedience, but He also values the life He gave you. You don't have to choose between a spiritual breakthrough and physical safety.

The Wisdom of "Modified" Fasts

If you are on medication that must be taken with food, a strict water fast might not be the path God has for you right now. Consider a "Daniel Fast" (vegetables and water) or fasting from specific comforts rather than all calories. In Isaiah 58, we see that the fast God chooses is more about the heart and the treatment of others than it is about an empty stomach.

Timing Your Prescriptions

If your doctor clears you for a partial fast, you must be strategic. Some medications for blood pressure or blood sugar can cause a dangerous "crash" if taken on a totally empty stomach. Never, ever skip your doses without a medical plan.

I tell my friends to treat their medication as "prescribed bread." It is a necessary part of your stewardship.

Stewardship Over Sacrifice

Taking care of your health is a form of long-term faithfulness. If you are struggling to afford the medications that would allow you to live a more active, focused life, let us help. We help Christians get their prescriptions for $40 a month so the financial burden never stands in the way of their spiritual walk.

Support your body while you seek the Lord. Get help for $40/mo.
